they have all the characteristics you would anticipate phones in 2011 to have. speaker phone, intercom among phones, mute, 1 button voice mail/answering machine, redial, neon orange back lighted keypad, simple and easy to use menu, loud or soft ringer, customizable banner, flash, amazing sound on both ends even with speaker telephone, huge rubber buttons, extended battery charge, slim style, modern black and gun metal colors casing, flat bottom to stand upright, sturdy style. Glad I got 4 of them. 1 for every space and 1 for the garage outside. Only the answering machine plugs into the wall telephone jack, the rest just plug into the wall with the AC plug. This phone set operates perfectly. I am not positive if the other reviewer just had a DOA unit. But once you connect the power and the telephone line it operates perfectly on a land line, or my Ooma.
